Dadanast'ada (Hello)

Stephanie One Spot is an artist from the Sarcee (Tsuut’ina) First Nation. She is a graduate of the Alberta University of the Arts and was raised on the Tsuut’ina reserve near the Buffalo Paddocks, where her early connection to land-based knowledge continues to influence her creative practice.

Her work explores the relationship between tradition and contemporary expression through an experimental use of texture, materials, and storytelling. Working across multiple media, she incorporates photographic references, spray paint, acrylic, mixed media, projection, visual media, and sculpture. She also engages natural materials such as hide, willow, sand, dirt, bark, and other elements gathered from the land.

Stephanie’s practice is guided by research into traditional stories and cultural knowledge, which she interprets through a contemporary artistic lens. Her work has been exhibited at AUArts Student Galleries, Calgary Central Library, Stride Gallery, The Bows, cSPACE, TRUCK Contemporary, ATB Branch for Arts and Culture, Fish Creek Library, Parks Calgary, The Confluence, and Crawlspace Gallery.

I have had the amazing opportunity to be a part of AUarts Indigenous strategic plan'/Pathways as the female student representative working along side of senior admin, the Elder’s circle and Auart’s President and CEO, Dr. Daniel Doz.

My artwork “Xanitii Shield” had the honour of being chosen to sit in the new home of Calgary’s Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Legacy Space. opened in 24’

This is a photo of my Grand-father and Great, Great Grand-father. It was taken at Calgary Stampede. He is telling a story of how one day the north and south will be one again. David One Spot was alive during the signing of Treaty 7 in 1877.

The female energy that we hold inside our bodies are sacred. Every month our cycle is renewed and our wombs hold space in our bodies to create life that needs to be nurtured and cared for. Finding agency through nature helps strengthen the connection through the natural cycles that our bodies endure. Feeling the vibrations and hums through our spirit from the channels of nature is a natural meditative remedy that helps our mind, bodies and spirit feel grounded in ourselves. These 2 images are of the same however, the colours represent the ever-changing emotions a woman goes through during her lifetime.
Red - menstrual cycle and connection to the natural world.
Purple - ceremony and connection to dreams.
Blue - womb and intuition.
Yellow - hope and connection to the divine/spiritualism

To your Eternity

Working with a light-weight material such as saran wrap allowed me to express the transparency of life through death and death through life that starts at birth. I started to explore forms, the anatomy of the human figure and the breakdown of what and where the spirit comes from and what happens during the threshold of life and in the instant of death. Without concentrating on the trauma and hardships of death in its own, I wanted to illustrate the wondrous and beautiful moment of the journey of the spirit through form and as an absence of time. In the spirit realm, time is non-existent and /or flows different than our world. All organic material at the end goes back into the earth and thus is born another cycle. This research and sculpture is an interesting way for me to investigate and talk about my personal spirituality without exposing my spirituality, culture and essence as a Dene, Tsuut’ina woman.
